Cornell Professor to Deliver Free Lecture on China

Dear CAFAM members,

Allen Carlson, an international relations expert from Cornell University, will deliver a lecture titled “Contemporary China: Dragon or Panda” on November 21 from 3:15 PM-5 PM in Garland Auditorium on Thornton Academy’s campus at 438 Main Street in Saco. The event is free and open to the public, sponsored by Thornton Academy and York County Senior College (YCSC).

Allen Carlson is an Associate Professor in Cornell University’s Government Department. He earned a PhD from Yale University’s Political Science Department and an undergraduate degree from Colby College. He serves as Director of Cornell’s China Asia Pacific Studies Program and is currently working on a project exploring the issue of nontraditional security in China’s emerging relationship with the rest of the international system.

Thornton Academy, whose mission is to “prepare students for a changing world” welcomes students from 35 countries around the globe, including China. Seven foreign language courses are offered to students, including four levels of Honors Chinese, as well as AP Chinese, and an after-school Chinese Club provides fun opportunities to practice conversational Chinese and learn about Chinese culture.

York County Senior College provides lifelong learning opportunities and the chance for seniors to interact with their peers, both in and out of the classroom. Affiliated with the University of Maine system, YCSC is run by a governing council of volunteers.
