The consuls will be at Super Great Wall Restaurant, South Portland, at about 1 pm. They invite any local Chinese residents and others to come meet them, and they will pay for lunch.

Some representatives from the Chinese Consulate in New York will be in Maine on Wednesday, January 2nd. They are inviting local Chinese and others who are interested to come meet them.

They will be at the Super Great Wall Restaurant in South Portland at about 1 pm, and have offered to pay for lunch for those in attendance.

Language Table Reminder Jan 9th and 23rd

Dear CAFAM members,

CAFAM is partnering with The Language Exchange of Portland to offer you a new venue for the future meetings of the Mandarin roundtable led by Viveca Kwan, CAFAM member and Mandarin instructor at The Language Exchange.

This month, January 9th and 23rd, from 12pm-1pm, the Mandarin roundtable will be held at The Language Exchange, 75 Market Street, Suite 305 (3rd floor) in downtown Portland.

These roundtables are open to all interested — members and non-members of CAFAM, students and non-students of The Language Exchange — and to all levels of Mandarin Chinese.

Come and partake in fun and informal conversations in Mandarin and get to know a community of like-minded people. Feel free to bring your lunch.

The Language Exchange was founded in 1992 and provides a broad range of language related services and instruction to individuals and businesses statewide and nationally.

Film Screening & Video Chat with Filmmaker Bing Liu

Dear CAFAM members,

A new documentary by filmmaker Bing Liu, “Minding the Gap,” is a coming-of-age saga of three skateboarding friends in their Rust Belt hometown hit hard by decades of recession. The film has received many awards and is short-listed for Feature Documentary Oscar.

Space Gallery is screening the documentary and hosting a live video chat with Bing Liu after the film. Director and filmmaker Liu is a young Chinese American man who is based in Chicago.

When: Sunday, Dec 30th, 7 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm)

Cost: $8 ($6 for Space members)

CAFAM Hosting Event on History of Chinese in Maine

Dear CAFAM members,

Please join CAFAM for a talk by board member Gary Libby about “The History of Chinese in Maine.” This event is part of a major statewide initiative called “Making Migration Visible,” spearheaded by Maine College of Art (MECA. CAFAM is one of the organizations collaborating with the “Migration” initiative to forward the conversation about migration—and immigration in Maine.

What: “The History of Chinese in Maine” – food and conversation, with CAFAM’s Gary Libby; reception with Chinese refreshments

When: December 13th, 5 pm

Where: Maine College of Art, 522 Congress St., Portland

Also: Gallery Talk with visiting artist Yu-Wen Wu follows our CAFAM event. Please stay for this opportunity to hear from the Boston-based Chinese artist, whose work is being exhibited at MECA.
