Where: Winslow Park, Freeport

CAFAM will be holding its annual summer pot luck picnic on Saturday, June 22nd, at Winslow Park in Freeport. Winslow Park is on the water with a beach and has plenty of room to fly kites and enjoy outdoor play. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and enjoy time with other CAFAM members and friends. CAFAM would love to have new people join us as well.

Change to tai chi schedule

Dear CAFAM members,

There won’t be any tai chi as scheduled for the next two weeks due to serious burns suffered by Karen Morency who is our tai chi leader.

The first tai chi session will be on July 20th at 9:00 am.

Thanks for your understanding.

Tai Chi at the Farmers Market

Dear CAFAM members,

Come join CAFAM for Tai Chi at the Farmers Market on Saturdays for the second summer starting on JUNE 22nd!

Tai chi is a mind-body exercise that is simultaneously easy to begin and near-impossible to perfect. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

Tai Chi at the Farmers Market is an introduction to a longstanding Chinese practice of community-building and personal wellness that prioritizes showing up and practicing over performance. It’s also a great way to make new friends and meet new neighbors.

-WHEN: 9am-10am every Saturday June 22– August 24 (excluding July 6 and 13)

-WHERE: By the rose garden at Deering Oaks Park during the Farmers’ Market. For those of you who don’t know where the rose garden is, it’s between State Street and High Street on the Forest Avenue side of the Oaks and just across State Street from the Farmers’ Market which makes it a convenient place to exercise and buy food.

-COST: Free – donations welcome!

Professional Tai Chi instructor Karen Morency is great at bringing folks in after a lesson has begun, so don’t be afraid to jump in if you’re running late!

See you there?

English Language Course beginning June 24th

Dear CAFAM members,

The University of Southern Maine offers courses for English Speakers of Other Languages. USM’s ESOL Department provides high quality, academically rigorous coursework for both local Maine residents and international students interested in studying English in Maine.

The department is currently accepting applications to our Summer Intensive English Language Program. (IELP) is for students who want to improve their academic English language skills… and to have fun learning about the Maine coast and its unique history and culture. We offer an excellent program (23 hours per week of study), which helps students reach higher levels of English language proficiency and prepare for academic programs at the university level.

All classes are held on the USM Portland campus, which provides easy access to the public bus system, restaurants, shops and the waterfront.

Courses Offered During Summer Session

Morning Session: MondayFriday (5 days a week)

Academic English in Reading and Writing – Students will gain a stronger foundation in understanding & using English correctly and with sophistication. The primary focus of this class is on building skills for academic study and professional life, particularly focusing on critical reading, academic writing and expansion of vocabulary, grammar and editing. All classes are small and interactive.

Afternoon Session: MondayThursday (4 days a week) (*Excursion days often run later)

Listening and Speaking on the Maine Coast – The primary focus of the afternoon session is to help students improve in areas of spoken communication and listening comprehension. Includes pair work, group work and other interactive methods as well as excursions into the local community for authentic communication opportunities.

If you have any questions or are interested in learning more, you can email usmesol or call 207-780-4432.

Thank you!

The Slants: Musical Performance and Discussion

Dear CAFAM members,

We are excited to be sponsoring a musical performance and discussion featuring Asian American dance rock band The Slants, including a talk by the band’s founder Simon Tam. The Slants are known not only for their music, but for winning their landmark U.S. Supreme Court case involving trademark and First Amendment issues over the band’s name. They successfully made the case that they should be allowed to trademark their name, The Slants, because it was their way of “seizing control of a racial slur.”

Join us to hear The Slants play an acoustic set, and also for a discussion with Simon Tam about music, their long legal battle, racial justice, Asian American issues and more. Local student rapper Eric Ruan of Thornton Academy will open for The Slants.

CAFAM will provide samples of Chinese tea at the event, courtesy of The Little Red Cup Tea Co.

Don’t miss this special event!

What: Music and Discussion with The Slants and Simon Tam
Where: Space Gallery, 538 Congress St., Portland
When: May 24, 2019; 7:30 pm (doors open at 7 pm)
Admission: $10 in advance; $12 day of show; $2 discount for CAFAM members
